THE GAME
The Pirates, who had been unable to score in their first match of the season - out, against Arnhem Falcons-, were determined to at least score some points, in Amsterdam. In the first quarter, the Pirates played defensively and could hardly get hold of the ball.
The first half ended in 9-0 for the Panthers, due to a Field Goal and a Touchdown (TD). After the half time break, the Pirates' head coach, Eduard Looten, and his assistants knew to raise the Pirates’ spirits. Armed with confidence in their cunning and stealth, the Defense, led by captain Russell Slootstra (80), effectively blocked the Panthers’ offence for the rest of the game. Unfortunately, lineman Roy Brandesma (72) injured his knee and had to be carried off the field where he had to stay, in the good care of Pirates' physiotherapist Kim de Bruijn, for the remainder of the match.
The Pirates’ tactics resulted, in the fourth quarter, in a succesful interception followed by a TD by corner back Isaiah Trouwloon (nr. 35) and 1 extra point by kicker Boudewijn Visscher. With a score of 7-9 and still some 10 min playtime left, the Pirates smelled victory and were determined to take it home. When the Offense finally could come into action, the running backs (RB), “shorty” Mitch van Loon (25) and Roel van Teeffelen (11) were all over the place and unstoppable, at least until Mitch, in the end, got injured and had to leave the game. The NY Bronx-raised Steven “Gator” Austin (30), mostly playing as Pirates’ -extermely dangerous- LB, now also starred in the role of RB, working miracles with the ball.
Pirates’ Quarter Back Mike Gerrits (13) displayed the calm and determined attitude that marks his talent as a QB, when, in a ghastly exciting play in front of the opponent’s end zone, in a split second he made the decision to keep the ball and run it to the Pirates’ second TD. 9-13 And 6 minutes to go. Unfortunately, the 2 extra points Pirates aimed for could not be conquered, so the victory was not yet secured. But the Pirates' Defense was determined, tactical and strong and did not give the Panthers a chance to break through .
Then, upon the change of play, Gator (30), both quick, hard and headstrong, ran the ball to a first down and with only 2 minutes play time left, the Pirates ended the game with a series of kneel-downs and this meant that they had won with a convincing 13-9!
